Drugstore Highlighters #2: Nyx Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder Review

Don't forget to check out my instagram (which you can find here) for live video swatches of products mentioned :) Don't forget to leave a like and/or follow if you want updates on new products!

I bought these highlighters off of Ulta's website for $7.99 each (0.21 oz/6g) They come in round plastic containers with a clear lid. There are five shades available: DCIP01: Twilight Tint, DCIP02: Lavender Steel, DCIP03: Crushed Bloom, DCIP04: Snow Rose, DCIP05: Synthetica

Don't forget to visit my instagram linked at the top of the page, I have videos showing the color shifting of each individual shade.
You can find the description of these powders on Nyx's website, which I'll link here. The shade descriptions on the website are as follows (along with my own opinion of what they look like):
01 Twilight Tint: White base with blue duo chromatic pearls (Accurate)
02  Lavender Steel: Soft lavender with pink and lavender duo chromatic pearls (To me, the powder looks like and ashy/grey lavender with only a pink shift)
03 Crushed Bloom: Dusty rose with pink and light blue duo chromatic pearls (Again, to me it seems like the color is more of a dusty mauve and it only seems to have a pink shift. Also the "duo chromatic-ness" is a little weaker/softer because the base and the "duo chromatic pearls" are two colors on the same spectrum, so the powder itself seems like a metallic blush instead of a highlighter that shifts between two colors)
04 Snow Rose: White base with pink and lilac duo chromatic pearls (Mostly agree, although I would just say its a white base with pink shift, can't quite pick up on the lilac)
05) Synthetica: Pink base with gold duo chromatic pearls (although I guess the base could arguably be coral, to me it seems light a straight-up orange base with gold shift)

(02 Lavender Steel)                  (01 Twilight Tint)

The Review:
These highlighters compared to others in my collection are not the smoothest nor softest powders. Not to say that there is no pigmentation, but it does take some more work to build up intensity. I'd also like to mention that texture varies depending on the shade.
From my experience swatching these with my fingers, Twilight Tint, Snow Rose and Synthetica all have the same feel: a smooth pressed powder. Lavender Steel however, is a little more stiff than the rest, it requires more effort to pick up product, thus more effort to get color payoff. Maybe because it has predominately purple pigments, which I've heard are often difficult to use in eyeshadows as well. Crushed Bloom is much more powdery than all the others, I notice quite a bit more fallout with that one.

Rating Out of 5 Stars? (1 being very poor, 5 being excellent):

I'd give it a 3 out of 5
  • the idea of duo chromatic highlighters is unique, these illumninators are quite fun and overall different from other basically gold or white gold highlighters on the market
  • in my opinion, these are like drugstore versions of popular color shifting highlighters, like Kat Von D's Alchemist Holographic Pallete and Anastasia Beverly Hills' Moon Child Glow Kit, in concept
  • with unique-ness aside, these are not the most pigmented highlighters I've ever used
  • these shades aren't quite practical. Not to say that you couldn't wear them lightly to look more natural, but come on. A streak of pink or blue on your cheek is far from natural (although fun)
